This institute is named after sister Marry Joseph Dempsey (1856-1939). She was the first surgical assistant of Dr. William Jems Mayo (Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minnesota).
Sister Mary was the first lady who noticed that there is an association between gastrointestinal Malignancy and metastatic umbilical nodule This pursuit leads her to great dedication to her patients. Dr. Mayo published the finding in 1929. And in 1949, the British Surgeon –Hamilton Bailey published it with the term – Sister Mary, Joseph Nodule.
